UND ES WAR SOMMER – DIETER THOMAS KUHN & BAND

What began in the 1990s as an ironic Schlager project among friends in Tübingen has developed into a cross-generational cult phenomenon over the decades: Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band. In summer 2024, the film will follow the eight-piece band on their major open-air tour of Germany, performing in front of thousands of fans sporting sunflowers, glitter and stick-on chest hair toupees.

Featuring previously unreleased archive footage, intense live performances and candid backstage moments, ‘Und es war Sommer – Dieter Thomas Kuhn & Band’ chronicles a band navigating the highs and lows of euphoria, exhaustion and decades of friendship. The film looks back at their early gigs in the 1990s, their unexpected success, and life in a state of constant upheaval, surrounded by tour buses, confetti, and pop medleys.

At its heart lies the close friendship between Thomas Kuhn and Philipp Feldtkeller, as well as the question of how long one can sustain a life on stage for. This is a heart-warming, funny and touching documentary about music, friendship and the art of taking life lightly, even when times are tough.
